Local approaches to data and evidence: Housing First Auckland snapshot

Housing First Auckland joined the Coalition to provide an update on the early insights they have gained looking at the differences between the men and women they are supporting in their housing services.

Although Housing First Auckland is still in the learning phase they have identified that 50% of those working with the Collective are women and are seeking to better understand the unique challenges that women face as they navigate complexities of gender and other factors, such as ethnicity and sexuality.

Their ‘current in time’ snapshot identified initial findings that:

  • The Collective is supporting an over-representation of Māori and Pacific women.

  • Women make up the large majority of ‘family households’ in the Collective - or those caring for children.

  • The majority of the women are in more suburban areas of Auckland (West, South, and North Auckland) with more men in urban/Central Auckland (West, South, and North Auckland).

  • Women were more likely to access the Collective from private accommodation and public housing than other housing types (such as sleeping on the streets or a temporary service facility).
